ISSUES

Crime

Canadian families deserve to feel safe, to know criminals will be held accountable for their actions, and to be sure that we are doing everything we can do to protect our children from the vicious cycle of drugs and crime. Unfortunately, too many of our neighborhoods & communities are being endangered by gang and gun violence.  Areas like Newton and Guildford have crime rates more than twice the national average.

Transportation
Congestion on our streets, highways and bridges in the Lower Mainland is an unending concern for commuters. As the region’s population continues to soar the problem will only get worse if we do not immediately invest in transportation infrastructure.

Tax Relief

Since coming to office, our government has taken action that will reduce the overall tax burden for Canadians and businesses by $190-billion. Our tax relief measures will reduce the overall tax burden to its lowest level in nearly 50 years.

Health Care
Canadians value their publicly-funded, universally-accessible health care system. Unfortunately, the previous Liberal government cut health care funding while patient wait times almost doubled. Conservatives have made historic increases in health funding and patient wait times are finally getting shorter.

Environment
Here in the Lower Mainland we appreciate the beauties and splendor of the world around us and want to leave clean air, water, and land to future generations. Like other Canadians, we want action on the environment; action that reduces green house gases while preserving our standard of living and way of life.

Education
The cost of going to university has skyrocketed in recent years. A little more than a decade ago, a good summer job combined with an after school job or work term, would go a long way towards paying for your expenses. Things have changed as the number of students attending post-secondary institutions has grown and schools have had to raise tuitions to cover more and more of their growing costs.

Immigration
The multicultural face of Canada is much in evidence here in the Lower Mainland and as a result immigration issues must be brought to the fore. Our immigration system should be efficient and effective in welcoming genuine immigrants and legitimate refugees and preventing abuse.

Agriculture
Canada’s agricultural producers strive to provide Canadians and the world with high-quality food. The operating environment for producers has evolved rapidly, providing opportunities for some sectors while others, such as cattle and hog producers, continue to face challenges.

Defence
In an unpredictable and volatile world, protecting Canadians and Canada is a fundamental responsibility of the government. The foundation for building the Canadian Forces of tomorrow was laid with the $5.3-billion, five-year Canada First defence plan announced in Budget 2006. Significant progress has already been made, with several major procurement projects announced and being implemented.

Seniors
As our population ages we must become increasingly aware of the issues of particular relevance to seniors, whether it is the affordability of medication, OAS, pensions, or care facilities. Canada’s seniors worked hard, made many sacrifices, and built our country. It is time to reward that hard work. Under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper the Government of Canada is delivering real results for our seniors.
